9 Steps to Sealing Your Sub Box

Step #1: Check if the Cuts are Accurate

Air gaps or jagged edges can drastically undermine the effectiveness of the seal. So, impeccably clean and straight cuts may allow you to forego specialized sealant, opting instead for simple Elmer’s glue and strategically positioned screws. 

The cleaner your cuts, the more robust the sealed seams become, ensuring a snug fit among all panels.

Step #2: Choose a Quality Sealant

The subsequent stage in sealing a subwoofer box involves selecting a suitable sealant or adhesive compound. Silicone is a popular choice due to its widespread availability and familiarity. 

Nevertheless, if silicone is not readily accessible, various alternative sealants can be employed, each with its pros and cons.

The following list provides an overview of diverse subwoofer sealants, highlighting their advantages and ideal applications:

Option #1: Silicone

Silicone is a widely accessible and straightforward adhesive that performs well with precise woodcuts. However, it doesn’t expand like polyurethane-based construction adhesives, potentially causing issues with uneven cuts. 

On the other hand, silicone offers remarkable strength and flexibility, preventing cracking. Typically, it requires 24 hours to cure before mounting the subwoofer, although some prefer to wait longer. 

Avoid installing the sub while silicone is still wet, as its vapors may cause damage. Opt for acrylic latex with silicone for enhanced strength and minimal fumes. Exercise caution and wear gloves when handling.

Option #2: Wood Glues (Elmer’s, Titebond, Gorilla)

Gorilla Glue, a polyurethane-based construction adhesive, expands 3-4 times upon application, filling gaps for a superior bond. With clean and straight cuts, wood glue is user-friendly and incredibly strong.

However, Gorilla Glue is not intended for gap-filling; it ensures adequate application for optimal results. While wood glue doesn’t fill gaps larger than 1/8 inch, it creates a bond stronger than the MDF [1] itself when dry.

Option #3: Caulking Gun

Caulk, a polyurethane-based construction adhesive, offers the advantage of expanding to fill gaps as it cures. Acrylic latex caulking is a viable option, while caulk with silicone, though more expensive and sticky, can also be used. 

Acrylic subwoofer boxes refer to this method. Alternatively, we suggest using acoustic sealant caulk if acrylic is unavailable. 

Option #4: Liquid Nails

Enclosure adhesives often include liquid nail solutions due to their thickness, which fills minor surface variations while maintaining enclosure strength. 

Liquid nails work best when cuts are less than perfect, as their thickness effectively fills gaps. In terms of bonding strength, it performs comparably to wood glue and dries rapidly.

Option #5: PL Premium Construction Adhesive

These adhesives are polyurethane-based, moisture-curing compounds that utilize caulk to securely bind seams. They form a resilient bond and excel in bridging gaps or uneven surfaces.

As moisture-curing agents, they provide a waterproof seal, making them suitable for various applications, including humid or damp environments. Additionally, their flexibility allows for better accommodation of material expansion and contraction.

Step #3: Seal the Insides of the Subwoofer Box

Sealing a subwoofer box involves not only sealing the seams but also treating the interior surfaces to counteract the wood’s inherent porosity, particularly with MDF. 

Apply a water seal to the box’s interior, such as polyseamseal all-purpose adhesive caulk—a water-based PVA (white glue) solution that cleans up with water. 

Alternatively, to add weight and dampen the enclosure while sealing the MDF, we recommend using boro-silicate paste or a fiberglass resin.

Step #4: Also Apply Your Chosen Sealant on the Holes

Extra holes in your subwoofer, such as small gaps around speakers or speaker terminals, may allow air to escape. To address this issue, utilize a gasket—a rubber or plastic ring placed around the hole—to create an effective seal.

Step #5: Inspect for Gaps

Filling all gaps is crucial for optimal sealing. Using a polyurethane-based construction adhesive, for instance, foams up to swiftly fill seams. 

Epoxy putty offers a simple solution for addressing old holes and gaps. If gaps persist, consider redrilling and employing new screws to achieve a tighter seal.

Step #6: Apply the Sealant on the Seams

At this stage, apply your chosen subwoofer sealant to all seams. Generously cover each seam with sealant or glue, ensuring thorough coverage.  

Pay special attention to internal seams, applying a substantial layer of sealant to create a robust and airtight seal, enhancing the performance and durability of your subwoofer box.

Step #7: Clamp the Pieces and Wait for the Sealant to Fully Cure

Allow the sealant to cure, using clamps to hold the subwoofer box components securely in place.

Keep in mind that cure times vary among sealants, and certain fumes, such as those from silicone, can damage the driver. 

Typically, silicone requires 24 hours to cure, although some prefer to wait longer for added assurance. Consult the recommended cure time for your chosen sealant and let the subwoofer set accordingly.

Step #8: Sand if Needed, Then Apply the Finish of Your Choice

After sealing the seams, the appearance might not be aesthetically pleasing. To achieve a more refined finish, consider using a finishing compound.

Option #1: Wood Filler or Putty

Wood filler and putty are adhesive compounds designed to rectify wood imperfections. While not the strongest options, they are suitable if no alternatives are available.

Wood filler helps fill small voids or improve the appearance of less attractive sealants, though it doesn’t reinforce weak spots. Typically, wood filler is water-based, while wood putty is often oil-based.

Option #2: Bondo

Avoid sculpting with Bondo, as it may crack; instead, use it as a finishing touch to enhance the subwoofer seam appearance. 

When using Bondo, mix small amounts at a time, as it hardens quickly. It forms a permanent, nonflexible bond that can be sanded and painted. 

Two types of Bondo exist: wood-based and automotive. Both are suitable for sealing subwoofer boxes, but the automotive version is generally easier to work with.

Step #9: Screw the Subwoofer Box

For a truly airtight box, employ mechanical fasteners like screws, nails, or staples. As an example, use a countersink pilot bit and 1 5/8″ drywall screws spaced six inches apart.

Allow the box to cure before adding screws, particularly with polyurethane adhesives that tend to ooze. 

Be cautious with fragile wood, as screws can cause damage. To prevent issues, predrill and countersink holes, and opt for high-quality plywood from the start.

When Not to Use Screws

Careless screw usage or poor-quality wood can damage your subwoofer box, potentially causing ply separation in low-grade plywood. 

To avoid this, pre-drill pilot holes and use an adequate number of screws based on the wood thickness—e.g., for 3/4 inch plywood, ensure no fewer than seven plies. 

If aesthetics are a priority, consider avoiding screws, as concealing them can be challenging unless using a veneer. 

Other Sealants You Can Use for Your Subwoofer Box

Spackle

We advise against using spackle, as vibrations may cause it to turn to dust. However, if necessary, apply caulk and smooth it over the spackle to ensure a more stable and lasting result.

Grout

Surprisingly, some individuals have used regular tile grout to seal subwoofer cabinets. Be aware that grout is quite rigid, and once dried, it can be challenging to remove, even with a chisel.
