The catch is that there are four different ways to do it, and picking the wrong one (or missing one TV setting) is why so many people end up with no sound, or only weak stereo. Before you reach for a cable, check what ports your TV and soundbar share and work down this priority list. HDMI ARC/eARC is the best option for almost everyone — one cable carries the audio and lets your TV remote control the soundbar’s volume. Use the others only when HDMI ARC isn’t available.
Method 1: HDMI ARC or eARC (recommended)

Method 2: optical (Toslink) cable
If your TV or soundbar lacks HDMI ARC, an optical cable is the next-best option. It reliably carries compressed surround up to Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1, with low latency and no lip-sync issues. Its limits: it can’t carry Dolby Atmos (neither the streaming nor the Blu-ray version), and it doesn’t pass HDMI-CEC, so your TV remote won’t adjust the soundbar’s volume.
- Find the port labeled “Digital Audio Out (Optical)” on the TV and the “Optical In” on the soundbar.
- Remove the small protective caps from both ends of the cable (a surprisingly common snag), then plug it in until it clicks.
- Set the TV’s audio output to “Optical” or “External Speakers.”
- Set the digital audio format to “Auto” or “Dolby Digital” — again, not PCM, so you keep 5.1 where available.
- Switch the soundbar’s input to “Optical” / “OPT.”
Method 3: Bluetooth (wireless)
Bluetooth is the cable-free option, best suited to casual listening rather than primary movie audio. The reason is latency: standard Bluetooth (the SBC codec) adds 150–300 ms of delay, which shows up as lips that don’t match the dialogue. Codecs like aptX Low Latency cut that to around 40 ms, but both the TV and soundbar have to support them.
- Put the soundbar in pairing mode — usually hold its Bluetooth button until the indicator flashes.
- On the TV, open Settings → Sound → Sound Output (or “Bluetooth Speaker List”) and scan for devices.
- Select your soundbar and confirm pairing.
- If audio lags behind the picture, look for an Audio Delay / A/V Sync slider in the TV’s sound settings and adjust until lips match.
Method 4: AUX or RCA (older TVs, last resort)
If a TV has no HDMI ARC, no optical, and no Bluetooth — typically a pre-2010 set — fall back to analog. Run a 3.5 mm cable from the TV’s headphone/audio-out jack (or an RCA-to-3.5 mm adapter from the red/white RCA outputs) into the soundbar’s “AUX In.” This is stereo only — no surround — so set the TV’s volume to roughly 50% and use the soundbar’s remote for the main level. Then set the soundbar’s input to “AUX.”

PCM vs Bitstream is the sneaky one. Switch to Bitstream/Passthrough/Auto so the TV sends the raw encoded stream and lets the soundbar decode full Dolby Digital, DTS, or Atmos.

If you’ve connected everything and still have silence, work through these in order — they resolve the vast majority of cases:
