Step 2: Choose your channel layout
Surround systems are described with a three-number shorthand: main speakers, then subwoofers, then height speakers. A “5.1.2” system has five main speakers, one subwoofer, and two height speakers. More channels add more enveloping, precisely placed sound, but they also demand more space, more speakers, and more amplifier channels. Step 3: Place the front speakers (L, C, R)
The front three speakers do most of the work — dialogue, music, and on-screen action all live here. Position the front left and right speakers 22 to 30 degrees off-center from your seat (THX specifies 22.5 to 30 degrees); most living rooms land naturally around 26 to 30 degrees. Aim to get the tweeters at or very close to ear height when you’re seated, and toe the speakers slightly inward toward the main seat for a focused stereo image.
The center channel is the single most important speaker for intelligible dialogue, so don’t skimp on it or hide it. Place it directly below or above the screen, as close to ear level as possible, and angle it up or down toward your ears if it’s offset. Keep all three front speakers timbre-matched — ideally from the same brand and line — so sounds pan seamlessly across the front stage.
Step 4: Position the surround speakers
In a 5.1 system, the two surround speakers belong to the sides of your seat, not behind it. THX places them at 90 to 110 degrees relative to the seat (Dolby suggests 110 to 120), which works out to roughly beside and just behind your ears. Mount them about two feet above ear level when seated, angled down toward the listening area, so the surround field wraps around you instead of beaming at the back of your head.
Stepping up to 7.1 adds two rear surround speakers behind the seat at 135 to 150 degrees, three to six feet from the listening position. This pays off most in larger or longer rooms where the side surrounds leave a gap behind you; in a small room, a well-placed 5.1 setup is often the better use of money.
Step 5: Add Dolby Atmos height speakers
Height channels are what make Atmos feel three-dimensional, placing rain, helicopters, and ambience above you. Dolby recommends overhead speakers at an elevation of 30 to 55 degrees from the seat, with 45 degrees as the ideal, and at roughly two to three times the height of your ear-level speakers. Atmos height effects are most convincing with ceilings between 8 and 11 feet; much higher and the overhead speakers may need stalactite brackets to stay effective.
You have three ways to get there. In-ceiling or on-ceiling speakers are the gold standard for accuracy. Atmos-enabled modules — upward-firing drivers that sit on top of your front speakers and bounce sound off the ceiling — are the easiest retrofit and work well with flat, reflective ceilings. A 5.1.2 system uses one pair of height channels (typically above and slightly ahead of the seat), while 5.1.4 and 7.1.4 add a second rear-height pair for fuller overhead coverage.
Step 6: Place the subwoofer (and consider two)
Bass is the most room-dependent part of any system, and a subwoofer’s position changes its sound dramatically. A front corner produces the most output but can sound boomy and uneven. The free way to find the best spot is the “subwoofer crawl”: temporarily put the sub at your listening seat, play bass-heavy content, then crawl around the room at floor level and listen for where the bass is deepest and most even — that’s where the sub goes. Avoid trapping a sub inside a closed cabinet, which muffles and colors the output. Step 7: Choose your display — TV or projector
A modern TV is brighter, simpler, and works in rooms with ambient light, with the largest consumer models now reaching 85 to 98 inches — plenty for most living rooms. A projector and screen deliver a genuinely cinematic 100-inch-plus image for less money per inch, but they need a dark, light-controlled room to look their best. If your space doubles as a bright living room, a large TV is the safer choice; if you can darken the room, a projector is the more theatrical one. Either way, set the display at a height where the center of the image is near eye level from your seat.
Step 8: Connect the receiver and wire the speakers
The AV receiver is the hub of the system: it powers the speakers, switches your sources, and decodes surround formats. Connect your sources (console, streamer, Blu-ray player) to the receiver’s HDMI inputs, then run a single HDMI cable from the receiver’s HDMI output to your TV’s eARC port — eARC sends lossless Dolby Atmos from the TV’s built-in apps back to the receiver over that one cable. Confirm both your TV and receiver support eARC before relying on it.
For speaker wiring, 16-gauge wire is fine for typical runs, and 14-gauge is worth it for runs over about 50 feet or for 4-ohm speakers. Keep polarity consistent — connect every speaker’s positive (+) terminal to the receiver’s positive terminal — because a single reversed speaker causes thin, phasey sound. Step 9: Calibrate — the step most people skip
Calibration is where an average setup becomes a great one, and most receivers automate the hard part. Place the included measurement microphone at ear height at your main seat, then at the other listening positions when prompted, and run the auto room-correction routine (Audyssey on Denon, YPAO on Yamaha, D.C.A.C. on Sony). It measures distances, levels, and how your room colors the sound, then applies corrective EQ — a bigger upgrade than any amount of extra wattage.
After the automatic pass, verify a few settings by hand. Set all speakers to “small” and the crossover to 80 Hz — the THX standard — so bass below 80 Hz is routed to the subwoofer, where it belongs; “large” is almost never the right choice even for tower speakers. Confirm the auto-detected distances and use an SPL meter or phone app to set each channel to about 75 dB for even balance. Acoustic treatment is the most overlooked upgrade in home theater, and the basics are cheap. The highest-value fix is taming first reflections: have someone slide a mirror along the side walls while you sit in your seat, and wherever you can see a front speaker in the mirror, an absorption panel there will sharpen clarity and imaging. Add bass traps in the room corners to even out boomy low frequencies, lay a rug on a bare floor between the speakers and the seat to kill floor reflections, and use curtains and bookshelves to break up hard, echoey surfaces.
